Ian McLean remembers the first art exhibition his daughter Paula attended as a member of the family, nearly 19 years ago.
“It was 1995 and I was having an exhibit of my work here at Gallery in the Grove and she was just an infant, so she’s really grown up around art, having spent her life with us visiting art galleries,” said Ian, a day before his joint exhibition with Paula opened at the Gallery in the Grove.
That exhibition—”The Same Things at the Same Time”—will run through March 3.
The connection with the Gallery in the Grove is deep and not just from those very early days of Paula’s young life.
In 2013 she was a recipient of a Gallery in the Grove Scholarship, which helped her in her earning an undergraduate degree, a Bachelor of Fine Art in Studio Art with a specialization in painting from Concordia University in Montreal. She is now in her final semester of a Master’s of Fine Art at the University of Waterloo.
Ian continues to teach art at Northern Collegiate in Sarnia, although he expects to retire in about a year and a half.
The journey to this exhibition began about a year ago when Gallery officials asked if Ian and Paula would be interested in showing their work together.
Sylvia Foreman, who is the exhibition co-chair, said organizers are pleased to see the exhibition come together.
“To be able to see Ian’s work with colour in oils flow so well with Paula’s careful, softer shapes is incredible,” said Foreman. “Both artists are extremely talented and our gallery is fortunate to exhibit them together. It’s an added bonus that Ian lives in Bright’s Grove and Paula grew up in the Grove.”
During the exhibition, jewellery produced by Sheila Bycraft, a Wardsville, Ontario-based artist who specializes in sterling silver, copper and stainless steel, will be on sale in the Gallery’s gift shop.
Gallery in the Grove is a volunteer operated non-profit art gallery located at 2618 Hamilton Road in Bright’s Grove.
The Gallery exhibits local and regional visual art from artists, emerging and established.
