Above average cold temperatures expected to ease

Watermain breaks on Friday include one on Christina Street near Exmouth

Above average cold temperatures in the last few days are to blame for several watermain breaks in Sarnia on Friday (Jan. 5), including one that resulted in the closure of Christina Street North between Maxwell and Nelson Streets.

The Christina Street break caused the roadway to collapse. A reported two-metre-deep hole then swallowed up a backhoe, although there were no injuries involved.

Bryan Prouse, Sarnia operations supervisor, called the accident “freaky.”

Water from the break had been pouring down the east side of Christina Street, leaving a frozen pool at Christina and Exmouth.

When the roadway collapsed, it effectively pinpointed where the break had occurred, at the west side of the road. Workers had first thought the break was on the east side.
