A very Canadian concert is coming to Grand Bend.
For Canada’s 150th Anniversary, Leisa Way has put together a very special show highlighting some of Canada’s favourite performers. She sings female favourites such as: Celine Dion, Anne Murray, Rita MacNeil, Shania Twain, Joni Mitchell, and K. D. Lang, while her bandmates sing the hits of Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, and Michael Bublé. The group also covers canuck bands such as: The Guess Who, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, and Steppenwolf.
“Leisa’s Canada 150 show is travelling across the country, from Glace Bay, Nova Scotia to Courtenay, B.C. We are so lucky to have her available to come to Grand Bend on her tour,” said concert organizer Mary Alderson.
On July 5, Way will be performing her show ‘Oh, Canada, We Sing for Thee’ on the Rotary Stage at Grand Bend’s Main Beach. The show starts at 7:00 p.m.
Way’s sojourn to Grand Bend is bound to evoke some romantic memories. Way met her husband David Nairn while acting in Camelot at the Huron County Playhouse in 1992.
While Way was a little shy around Nairn at first, the two began to talk and soon any time off they had during the run of Camelot was spent together.
“We went to a movie at the Starlight Drive-In in Shipka and we also had a great day at the Zurich Bean Festival….and made it a point to try to go every year after that,” said Way. “At first I thought it was just going to be a fun summer theatre fling. Well, 25-years later, it’s the fling that just keeps on flinging”
Way has had a long musical theatre career. Early on, she spent six summers in the iconic role of Anne in the Charlottetown Festival’s famous Anne of Green Gables. She has played a myriad of lead roles, from Maria in The Sound of Music to Peter in Peter Pan.
Leisa Way and The Wayward Wind Band are well known in Ontario and throughout Canada. She is a favourite at Victoria Playhouse in Petrolia, Port Stanley Festival Theatre, and Lighthouse Festival Theatre in Port Dover.
The concert is free, however, organizers ask to “pay what you can” as a donation. Beach Parking is free after 7:00 p.m. and Main Street Parking is free after 5:00 p.m.
