Celebrating Record Store Day with loads of bands and charitable giving as well

Co-owner, Cheeky Monkey

It’s that time of year again. Time to start planning for RECORD STORE DAY, the annual international day to celebrate the art of music at independent stores like Cheeky Monkey in Sarnia.  This year the special day to mark on your calendar for RSD at Cheeky Monkey is Saturday, April 20, 2013 starting at 9:30 a.m. until we close at 5:30 p.m.

As you may have noticed, each year there are less and less stores like Cheeky Monkey to be found.

Those that are surviving the hard times are strong and holding on tight to doing what they love to do – sell music in a real format you can hold in your hand, whether it be a CD, a vinyl record or perhaps a DVD or BluRay format.  The fact we are still here in a bricks and mortar location selling music is definitely reason to celebrate.

We are working on the plans for THE big day.

maryann and roland croppedSo far, sound man Ron Behro has volunteered his time to be here for the day to make sure the live in-store musicians sound great.

As for the live music, the first band of the day will be Sarnia’s own BORDERLITE TRIO at 10:00 a.m., followed at 11:30 a.m. by MIKE BLACKMORE & THE ORDER.

ERIKA & SARA will come by at 1:30 p.m., followed by the last band of the day at 3 p.m.—Toronto's BLURRED VISION.

BLURRED VISION will appear later that evening at the Stubborn Mule as part of the first Sarnia INDIEFEST concert series.

Ever faithful volunteer staff, LAURISSA & ROSS ELLSWORTH have confirmed they will be here with smiles on their faces (as always) to help out.  There will be a table of snacks to enjoy, of course, along many some other in-store surprises.

One of the biggest features of the day are the exclusive releases that come out, mostly on vinyl.  As in past years, my co-owner and husband Roland orders tons of them, but we do not know until they get there what we will have – they are that exclusive.

This year a new and exciting part of the day will be the poster sale.  Throughout the year, Cheeky Monkey receives posters from their many suppliers to display in the store.  They have been saving them up for this special occasion to raise money for charity. All proceeds from poster sales will go to the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign – Youth Resource Houses.  Funds raised will assist three local YMCA Community Resource houses’ before-and-after school programs.

We sincerely hope you can join us for Record Store Day. We also want to thank all our loyal customers for their continued support as well as welcome all new customers to the joys of shopping in a real record (and so much more) store.
