Complaint over potential investment fraud has OPP issuing warning

Don't make financial agreements over phone or Internet without knowing the person

Complaints over the weekend about an alleged fraud involving an elderly area resident has prompted Lambton OPP to issue a reminder: stay away from making any financial agreements over the phone, Internet or any other method if they don’t personally know to whom they are speaking.

“Play it safe and use local financial investors or financial institutions to help you make your financial and investment decisions,” said an OPP news release. “Remember that quick money or quick returns are usually too good to be true especially if you have an unknown caller from off-shore investors.”

It would appear that the latest victim sent $19,500 to an investor in the United Kingdom, the circumstances of which have the OPP treating the matter as a fraud. The resident has contacted the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre for assistance.
