On June 28, 2015, Vern Leslie Gray – Beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, passed away peacefully with his family by his side. Vern is predeceased by his wife Helen a mere two weeks ago, and by his sisters Myrtle and Nellie. Vern will be deeply missed by his three step-children Jim Macaulay (Cathie), Janet Erickson (Howard) and Judy Hodgins (Mark). In addition, he leaves behind his much loved grandchildren Emily Hodgins, Nicole, Adam and Aaron Macaulay, several great grandchildren, his brother Lyle Gray, his sister Lois Hammell and his sister-in-law Ann Gibson. A WWII RCAF Veteran, Vern was a long time, dedicated member of the 403 Wing Royal Canadian Airforce Association, having served as President and was a long time member of the 44 Sarnia Imperial Squadron Air Cadet Sponsoring Committee. Vern also served as Commander of the Sarnia Power and Sail Squadron as well as District Commander. More importantly, Vern was a good man. He was a debonair man about town when he met our mom, Helen. An accomplished ballroom dancer, he quickly whisked her off her feet. We could not have chosen a better husband or father. Taking the role of father seriously, Vern was always there for us, right to the end – offering a helping hand, advice, or just plain love. Family and friends will be received at SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 1576 London Line, Sarnia, for a 403 Wing Memorial Service on Thursday, July 2, 2015, at 6:30 p.m. with visitation following until 9:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held at Smith Funeral Home on Friday, June 3, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow at 403 Wing RCAF Association, 415 Exmouth Street, Sarnia. A private interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to 44 Sarnia Imperial Squadron Air Cadets, or CCMF – Community Concerns for the Medically Fragile (cheques only at the funeral home please).
