Lambton College plans lunch and learn to outline various spa service programs

electrolysisLooking for a new career path?

Already working in the spa service industry and looking to enhance your skills?

Lambton College has a suggestion: consider one of the programs in its School of Part-time Studies.

Lambton offers programs in Nail Care and Enhancement (NCEC), Cosmetology (COSM), and Electrolysis (ELCC), and all students who enroll get the opportunity to learn in one of the biggest and finest esthetician teaching labs in Canada.

On March 18, the school is holding a "Lunch and Learn" to give prospective students an overview of the electrolysis industry, and a basic description of the courses required in order to achieve an Electrolysis certificate from Lambton College.  In addition, professionally certified Electrologists will provide electrolysis demonstrations to attendees.

Faculty will be available to answer questions at the event, which runs from noon to 1 p.m.

For more information on the event, or to learn more about The Spa at Lambton, please contact Lori Kaempf at (519) 542-7751 ext. 3622

All students in the Nail Care and Enhancement, Cosmetology, or Electrolysis programs will have the opportunity to learn in The Spa at Lambton and receive hands-on spa-service experience. The Spa at Lambton has 15 stations equipped with the most modern esthetic equipment and multimedia capabilities. For example, when students are learning how to properly wax an eyebrow, instructors can use the high-tech cameras set up on the ceilings in each classroom to zero in on the eyebrow demonstration. This way, students can see the detailed demonstration on the big television screen instead of crowding around the volunteer receiving the service.

The spa facilities and classroom design enhances learning and prepares students for the world of spa-service work. Not only will students learn the skills needed to provide services in beauty salons, they will also learn retail and business experience, as one course requires students to run The Spa at Lambton as a full-service spa.

The instructors and faculty involved with these programs are experienced in the spa-service field and are dedicated to developing students into successful professionals.

Nail Care and Enhancement (NCEC) and Cosmetology (COSM)

The NCEC program is designed to prepare students for professional careers as Nail Technicians. Students will learn an integration of theory and practical application using up-to-date techniques and treatments.

The COSM program appeals to students who are interested in a career in cosmetology. Course work will prepare students for employment in beauty salons, spas, or to work independently.

Graduates of the Hairstyling program at Lambton can take two courses from the NCEC program, or two courses from the COSM program to receive the Board of Governors Certificate in that area. The other required courses will have been fulfilled upon completion of the Hairstyling program. Professionals in the spa-service field can use their work experience to apply to one of these programs, and if they qualify, they may be only two courses away from full certification.

Interested individuals with no prior college or work experience are also welcome to enroll in the NCEC or COSM programs to gain the skills to work in nail care and/or cosmetology. To apply, students are required to have their high-school diploma or equivalent. All courses from the NCEC and COSM programs are transferable to the full-time Esthetician program at Lambton.

Students in this program are taught permanent hair removal and temporary reduction methods. Course work allows students to gain knowledge of the anatomy of the skin, hair structure, and the electricity and chemistry involved with electrolysis. Certified professionals visit the classroom to provide hair removal demonstrations to students, giving them the opportunity to see hair removal procedures first-hand. Students spend 90+ hours in a clinical lab setting.

Individuals with an Esthetician Diploma, or those with equivalent experience, can apply to the Electrolysis program to obtain a Board of Governors Certificate in Electrolysis. Students can earn this certification in as little as 15 weeks.
