Local church continues ‘post-Christmas parade’ block parade

Event at corner of Parker/Nelson will include free hot dogs, hot chocolate and 'goodies'

A few years ago, the congregation at Lighthouse Community Church, meeting on Saturday evenings and Sunday mornings at Parker Street and Nelson, would see its attendance drop significantly on the Saturday of the Kinsmen Santa Claus Parade.

It turns out, not unsurprisingly, that families with young children were heading to the longstanding community parade event.

Not long after that realization, a new Lighthouse tradition was born—the one-night cancellation of the Saturday evening service replacing it with a community block party in the church building parking lot.

That takes place tonight (Saturday, December 7), a party-like format that will include free hot dogs and hot chocolate as the church welcomes post-parade viewers to the property.

“This is one of the opportunities that we look forward throughout the year to get to know our neighbours in a unique way,” says Pastor Gerry Froese. “We’ve seen hundreds over the years come by for warmth, conversation and a great time and tonight will be no exception.”

The event runs from 6:30 p.m. to approximately 8 p.m.
