Lambton Shores is partnering with the developer of a mobile payment service to help residents and visitors with parking issues this summer.

The application, HonkMobile, is said to be a convenient way to find and pay for parking. The service was launched in Grand Bend on Wednesday.

The app, which is free and downloadable for Apple devices and those based on the Android operating system, lets users search, pay for and top up parking from their phone or tablet, theoretically at least eliminating the need to drive around searching for parking lots.

The idea, officials say, is to reduce traffic congestion, pollution, stress and frustration.

About 750 spaces across eight lots in Grand Bend are searchable through HonkMobile.

Users of the service receive a 15-minute reminder before their parking expires and can buy more parking time remotely, preventing them from getting tickets and removing the need to keep change in the car. The app also stores and manages parking receipts.

“The introduction of HonkMobile in Lambton Shores is a new customer service initiative which will provide additional convenience for visitors to Grand Bend,” said Bill Weber, mayor of the Municipality of Lambton Shores. “We are pleased to be offering this quick and easy way to pay for parking from the convenience of their vehicle and hope that many will take advantage of this new offering.”

Using a single account, users of HonkMobile can pay for parking anywhere the service is accepted across North America. The company says it serves over 500 locations with 50,000 parking spaces.
