Gateway Casinos, the new owner/operator of the gaming and entertainment facility located on the St. Clair River in Point Edward, took the wraps off its MATCH restaurant on Thursday in an event that featured “signature” drinks named after two well-known pro hockey veterans.
For Dino Ciccarelli, a veteran of the Detroit Red Wings, the drink is “Hometown Red.” Wendel Clark, a former star with the Toronto Maple Leafs, has “Rugged Blue” in his corner.
For the month of July, a portion of sales from each of the two signature drinks will be donated to St. Joseph’s Hospice.
Linda McColl, the new general manager of the facility, said capturing the unique character of the community is always a goal, something she said has been achieved as the $26-million redevelopment and rebrand of the facility—now to become Starlight Casino—extends to its expected completion in the fall.
“MATCH Point Edward gives a great flavour of the community and showcases its incredible natural surroundings along the river,” she said.
The restaurant seats 286.
One of the “touchpoints” of the new restaurant is an abstracted 3D wall mounted graphic that pays homage to the Grand Trunk Railway, which operated nearby.
Other images are also featured in the restaurant, including stencil art on bar column tiles that reference prohibition era smuggling activities, the date “1838,” which references the date a commercial fishery was established in the area, and a quote from hockey’s Don Cherry: “People think common sense is common—but it’s not.”
There are also numerous quotes related to Point Edward etched into table edges:
—Three cheers across the blue waters.
—Cross that bridge when you come to it.
—The starting point for all achievement is desire.
—Style is the perfection of a point of view.
—Ideas are the beginning point of all fortunes.
