OPP puts out ‘caution’ about school buses and the ‘need to obey’

Lambton OPP are reminding motorists of one basic “back to school” tip—but this one for those on the road rather than the students themselves.

The increase in pedestrian, bicycle, and motor vehicle traffic, including school buses, has prompted the advisory.

In particular, motorists are being advised about the requirement to stop for stopped school buses with their overhead red signal lights flashing.

“Caution must always be exercised by motorists, especially when around school buses which are parked, stopped, or otherwise,” said an OPP release. “Motorists must also slowdown in school safety zones, and be prepared to stop for crossing guards, crosswalks, and pedestrians. Caregivers are encouraged to speak to their children about road safety rules, school bus and pedestrian safety. It is no secret. The vast majority of our collisions occur due to inattentive driving.”
