Sarnia, citing compromised ability, ends employment of fire chief

Pat Cayen, who had until Thursday had been the chief of Sarnia Fire Rescue Service, is no longer a city employee.

The announcement, made in a media release by City Manager Lloyd Fennell Friday morning, said "pending charges have compromised his ability to carry out his duties."

Those charges, related to sexual assault, were laid in November 2012. Since then, the now former chief had been taking vacation days, his duties being handled by two deputies.

The 54-year-old Cayen, who came to Sarnia in 2003 as a deputy chief, was promoted in 2005.

For the time being, his duties will continue to be handled by the two deputy chiefs until a replacement is hired.

Cayen's next court appearance is Jan. 22.
