Sarnia looking for answers as to scope of environmental issues in Centennial Park

The discovery of what is described as "surface level tar-like material" in Centennial Park has Sarnia city staff looking for answers as to the scope of any problems that exist from historical activities in the area.

On Monday, City Council will be asked to sole source the hiring of Golder Associates Limited at a cost of $55,700 for a closer look.

The Phase 2 Environmental Site Assessment will follow up on the Phase 1 work that was done last year.

At that time, several areas of potential environmental concern were raised by Golder, including:

Uncertainty in the disposal of chemicals and materials typically used in the salt and lumber
