Sarnia Police say they caught man in process of stealing copper

Sarnia Police say a 43-year-old Grand Bend man faces charges of theft under $5,000, possession of stolen property and possession of break-in tools after a call to the area of Campbell Street and Ontario Streets on Wednesday (Jan. 30).

Around 9:30 a.m., witnesses reported seeing a man dressed in black trying to steal copper wire from a compound in the area then cutting the wire into shorter pieces.

When the man was spotted by police, he walked away but was subsequently questioned by police, who arrested him and found gloves, a flashlight, utility blade and wire cutters. There was a quantity of copper wire near the side of the road and two holes had been cut in the compound fence.

The accused will make his first court appearance on March 5, 2013.
