4,172 fans packed the Progressive Auto Sales Arena in Sarnia for the Annual Family Day game vs. the Saginaw Spirit (22-26-7-2).
Jordan Ernst (8) scored the games first goal on the Power Play to put the Sting on top early in the first. Jordan Kyrou would earn an assist on the Ernst tally and continue his 21 game point scoring streak, climbing to fourth in the Ontario Hockey League points race. Former Sting Hayden Hodgson would continue his career year scoring his 31st goal of the season at 17:29 to tie the game at one’s heading into the first intermission. Sarnia would edge the Spirit in the shots-on-goal category 12-11 in the first.
The scoring would open up in the 2nd period with five tallies in the frame. Jaden Lindo (17) and Jordan Kyrou (26, 27) would give the Sting a 4-2 lead before Saginaw’s Mathew Kreis (10) would get the Spirit back within one heading into the third. Shots-on-goal through two was 25-21 in favor of the visitors.
Penalty trouble would haunt the Sting in third period, resulting in four straight Spirit goals with 2 on the man-advantage. Detroit Red Wings prospect Filip Horonek would give the Spirit the 5-4 lead While overage Centre Kris Bennet would score the eventual game winner.
The Sting would pressure the Spirit until late in the game as Drake Rymsha (24) would put the Sting within one. With the goalie pulled the home team had several chances to tie the game, but could not solve Spirit Goalie Evan Cormier and would fall to Saginaw 6-5 on Monday afternoon.
The Sting remain five points up on the Spirit for the eighth and final playoff spot in the tough Western Conference, both teams have 11 games remaining. The Sting will hit the road for their next three contests vs. Sault Ste. Marie, Flint & Windsor before returning home to take on the Flint Firebirds Wednesday, March 1st.
