Ship heading southbound catches a beautiful ‘end of day’

The John J. Boland was heading downstream from Lake Huron to the St. Clair River on Tuesday, Nov. 28 when we captured it from the Point Edward shore.

The vessel is a diesel-powered lake freighter that’s owned the American Steamship Company. Built in 1973 by the Bay Shipbuilding Company in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, and originally named the Charles E. Wilson, it was renamed in 2000.

The ship is 680 feet (210 metres) long and 78 feet (24 metres) wide and has a carrying capacity of 34,000 gross tons.
