Walsh, Philip Albert, (Dec. 29, 2016)

Peacefully, with his loving daughter by his side, on Thursday, December 29, 2016, at St. Joseph’s Hospice, Phil Walsh passed away at the age of 63.  Survived by his son Chris (Sarah Thompson), his daughter Heather, and their mother Valerie. Cherished grandfather of Charlotte and Grady. Dear brother of Frances (Mike) Gillis, Joe Walsh and Jim Walsh. Loving uncle of Kate Hartery, Kim Gillis, David Gillis, and Robert Gillis and great-uncle to Amelia Hartery. Predeceased by his parents Clarence and Thelma. Phil became a volunteer firefighter for Sarnia Township Fire Department in 1976. He was hired full-time in 1977 and joined the City of Sarnia Fire Department after amalgamation. Throughout his career, he was a strong advocate for the health, safety and fair compensation of his fellow firefighters. He served on the Ontario Professional Fire Fighters’ Association at a local level, as vice-president of the 5th District, and as a member of the OPFFA Health & Safety Board. Phil retired as Captain due to illness in 2004. He fought a 25 year battle with Multiple Sclerosis. He will be missed by all whose lives he touched. Cremation has taken place. Family and friends will be received at SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 1576 London Line, Sarnia, on Tuesday, January 3, 2017, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, January 4, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to the Ontario March of Dimes, the MS Society or the St. Joseph’s Hospice (cheques only at the funeral home please).
