This year’s ‘BIG’ event is expanding to include First Responders

Third annual Bluewater International Granfondo will take place on August 5, with plans to increase registration to 1,000

Dr. Glen Maddison is medical director of St. Joseph's Hospice, one of the charities that is being supported by the Bluewater International Granfondo. The event takes place on August 5, 2018.

There was little question that the Bluewater International Granfondo, a signature cycling event for all levels that begins at Mike Weir Park, would take off when it first began in 2016. Indeed, all 500 spots were sold just four weeks prior to the event, which was voted one of the top four in Ontario and top 11 in the country.

Just a year later, that number was bumped up to 750 and now, in its third year, organizers expect to host 1,000 riders.

This year’s event—BIG for short—will take place on August 5, 2018, with the big news being the hosting of the Ontario First Responders Road Cycling Championship, an event involving teams of first responders.

Ken MacAlpine, who chairs the organizing committee, says all riders have several routes to choose from: a 50k, 100k and 150k, each with its own start time.

While organizers expect the day to be enjoyable for riders, the lead up to the event is also worth talking about, specifically the Wednesday night rides that begin May 16 at 6 p.m. and continue for 12 weeks.

Those registering for the Wednesday night rides will receive special perks, with details available HERE.

This year’s BIG event, as in the past, will see net proceeds going to St. Joseph’s Hospice and Bluewater Health Foundation, with support for palliative care.

NGL Supply Co. Ltd. has been the presenting sponsor of the Bluewater International Granfondo since its inception.
